The project in short
Our project is a collaborative one: between a school and us, between teachers and teachers. Our aim is to help secondary school teachers at all levels and all ages (in the Netherlands: from (v)mbo 1 to vwo 6) use fiction and visual material to develop their learners' citizenship competencies.
In particular, our material and approach lends itself to develop:
Critical thinking, watching, reading.
Empathic abilities
Awareness of the world, and of one's (social) role and identity in it
The material we develop uses photos, paintings and other visual material in conjunction with texts (short fiction, novels if so wished) which can all be handled in class without specific preparation from the leaners' side (except, of course, in the case of a novel which might require individual pre-class reading).
This material is based on a whole approach to dealing with texts in class, and to literature at school in general - the details of which you can find all over this site.
We work in collaboration with teachers, which means that our material is adapted to what teachers would like to discuss in class - which social, societal and moral themes they would like to handle.
We provide workshops as well, as having the material alone is often not enough: the method is what matters most.
